A daily routine with a dog that the whole household can share

Dogs thrive on a predictable day: walks, meals and rest at roughly the same times. The plan below is a starting point for a healthy adult dog. Puppies, seniors and dogs on a diet need their vet’s plan. What makes it work in a shared household is not the plan itself, but knowing who has already done which part of it.

Walk first, then eat

The single most useful rule: walk before the meal, not straight after it. Vigorous exercise within about an hour after eating is linked to gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV, “bloat”), a life-threatening emergency that mostly hits large, deep-chested breeds. A gentle potty trip after a meal is fine; running and fetching are not.

So the plan puts the morning walk at 07:30 and breakfast at 08:15, the evening walk at 17:30 and dinner at 18:30.

Two meals, and the gaps in between

Adult dogs usually do well on two meals a day (VCA). Between them, adult dogs should get outside at least every 6–8 hours. A working day from 08:00 to 17:30 is longer than that, which is why the plan has a midday potty break. Households solve that one differently: a partner working from home, a dog walker, daycare.

The last trip before bed (around 22:00) is part of every potty-schedule guideline, and it is the one that most often gets forgotten when two people each think the other did it.

  • 07:30 morning walk
  • 08:15 breakfast
  • 13:00 midday potty break (optional: who covers it?)
  • 17:30 evening walk
  • 18:30 dinner
  • 22:00 last potty break

Small daily extras

Daily tooth brushing is the most effective dental care you can do at home (AVMA, VOHC). Several times a week still helps, so treat it as optional. Noting poop and its consistency takes two seconds and gives your vet real data when something is off.

Splitting the plan between people

A shared routine fails at the handover, not at the plan: two people feed dinner, or nobody takes the late walk because each assumed the other would. Agree who usually covers which slot, and make every slot visible to everyone the moment it is done.

In DidWeFeed this plan is the dog starter routine: one tap marks a slot done on every phone in the household, and reminders only go out for slots that are still open.

Common questions

Should I walk my dog before or after feeding?

Before. Vigorous exercise within about an hour after a meal is linked to bloat (GDV), especially in large, deep-chested breeds. A calm potty trip after eating is fine.

How often does an adult dog need to go out?

At least every 6–8 hours, plus a last trip before bed. Puppies and seniors need to go out more often.

Does this plan work for puppies?

No. Puppies eat more often and need far more potty breaks. Use your vet’s or breeder’s plan for them.
